Ahaz was exhorted to keep calm, not fear, and stand firm. The LORD offered Ahaz a sign, for which Ahaz refused to ask. The LORD, however, gave him the sign anyway. In his crisis, Ahaz sought help from his enemy, Tiglath-Pileser, king of Assyria. He placed his confidence in a man, rather than the LORD. Tiglath-Pileser gave Ahaz trouble rather than help. King Ahaz became more unfaithful to God, and sought help from the gods of Damascus, but they were his downfall. Ahaz provoked the God of his fathers to anger. My husband and I were enjoying a brisk walk with our dog, Chloe, when I pulled my smart phone out of my pocket to check the "Map My Walk" app. Curious about how far we'd walked, I took my focus off the path failing to see the sidewalk was not level. My toe caught an uneven place, and I went tumbling. I hit my head and fell on my side, certain I broke ribs. After walking home, I was dizzy and in a great deal of pain. I needed help not only to sit, but to stand as well. I was a mess. My thoughts were plagued by "If only I'd paid attention...".<br />

Jotham, king of Judah ( 2 Kings 15: 32- 38; 2 Chron. 27) is described as a man who did what was right in the eyes of the LORD. He rebuilt the Upper Gate of the temple, and also built towns, forts, and towers. He warred against his enemies and conquered them. Jotham did not repeat the sin of his father Uzziah. God allowed Jotham to grow powerful because he ordered his ways before the LORD his God (2 Chron. 27:6). <br />
<br />
"Ordered" (kuwn; Strong's number 3559) means "to be firm", "be stable", "be established", "to be fixed", "be steadfast". From Baker & Carpenter's <u>Complete Word Study Old Testament Dictionary</u>, it is "a verb meaning to set up, to make firm, to establish, to prepare. The primary action of this verb is to cause to stand in an upright position, and thus the word also means fixed or steadfast." The same Hebrew word is used in Proverbs 4: 26 "Watch the path of your feet and all your ways will be established."<br />

The things of this world can distract and trip us up. The fall can leave us bruised, broken and regretful. Jotham is an example of one who stood firm in the midst of a corrupt generation. I don't want God to oppose me. I pray the Holy Spirit will show us our pride so that we can acknowledge and turn away from it, and live humbly. For the humble, there is grace, wisdom, and honor. <br />

Jeroboam set up altars and idols at Bethel and Dan. Jeroboam also rejected the Levites - God's ordained priests- replacing them with others who would practice idolatry.</strong></div>

<strong>Jeroboam, son of Nebat, led Israel to sin by providing the wrong gods, in the wrong places, using the wrong authority. He did not do right in God's eyes. Jeroboam rejected the LORD's requirements for worship, and his sin is repeatedly emphasized (2 Kings 14: 23-24; 15: 8-9, 17-18, 23-24, 27-28). This was Jeroboam's legacy. </strong></div>

In place of "deeply" some translations use the word "fervently". The word means intensely, earnestly, fervently. It comes from a verb meaning "stretch out the hand".</strong></div>

<strong>Friends and family members gathered in our church sanctuary to honor a beloved pastor at his memorial service. Pastor Gene was a sweet man with a twinkle in his eye. He was 90 years old. Married 61 years, he and his wife raised six children. Gene also served his country in the military. Pastor Gene loved God and cared deeply for people. </strong></div>

<strong>A wise teacher told me, "There's no retirement in the kingdom of God." On his last day, Pastor Gene attended church, ministering to and praying for people. When my oldest granddaughter was five, I explained our hearts are like a treasure box, and God wants us to store His Word in our "treasure boxes" - our hearts. Then God's Word will be there when we need it, and we can "get it out" and use it (apply it) to our lives. </strong></div>

<strong>To help her memorize Bible verses, we made an "ABC" memory verse scrapbook. She memorized verses beginning with each letter of the alphabet. Next we made a page including that letter, the verse, and a photo to illustrate the verse. </strong><strong>Upon completion, she has a special keepsake filled with Scriptures she's hidden in her heart.</strong></div>

<strong>So that's my strategy....we're going to have to sing those verses. And I won't dare tell her she's learning and memorizing Bible verses! That will be my secret... for a while anyway. We're starting with the "Y" verse (You can go in alphabetical order if you want) - "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path." Psalm 119: 105. Using the tune from Amy Grant's version of "Thy Word", we sang the verse over and over again. Even little brother sang along! Then, each child sang it alone. Last, we turned the verse into a simple prayer: "Thank you, God for giving us your word that is a lamp to our feet and a light for our path. Thank you that your word directs us and guides us. Help us to obey your commands. In the name of Jesus, amen." </strong></div>

<strong>As a reminder of life's priorities, our Bible study leader presented an illustration using rice, walnuts, and a jar. The jar represents our time. The rice represents activities that consume our time- things such as a career, cooking, cleaning, laundry, exercise, appointments, hobbies, and social networking. The walnuts represent the most important things- God's Word, worship, and prayer. When the teacher filled the jar with rice first, the walnuts (the most important things) didn't all fit. </strong></div>

A new school year is underway. After purchasing new clothes, school supplies, and textbooks, students are "ready" for school. But, in our society, wisdom is lacking. "Wisdom" is NEVER on the school supply list! God's Word tells us to seek wisdom (Prov. 2:4). The LORD promises to generously give wisdom to those who ask (James 1:5). In addition to gaining wisdom, we also pray for our grandchildren to develop godly attitudes, place their confidence in the LORD, set right priorites, treat others with love and respect, obey those in authority, and resist temptation. </div>

During a four-day stay with Mimi and Grandpa, one of our granddaughters made it known they are allowed to chew gum on Fridays. <br />
<br />
On the final night with our grandchildren, a Friday, we attended a youth dance performance at our church. During the last number, "Sparkles" (my youngest granddaughter) suddenly realizes it's Friday, and she is lacking! She wants gum, and goes in urgent pursuit!<br />
<br />
She rushes to me. "Mimi, do you have any gum?!!!" <br />
<br />
"No, I don't. Mimi doesn't chew gum."<br />
<br />
She turns and darts to her Grandpa. "Grandpa, do you have gum?" Another "No".<br />
<br />
After the performance, Sparkles remains relentless, sounding almost desperate..."Mimi, don't you have<em> </em><strong><em>any</em> </strong>gum?"<br />
<br />
"No Sparkles. I already told you I don't have any gum."<br />
<br />
Thanks to Grandpa, there was gum at home. Finally, Sparkles got her Friday piece of gum. And, because her Grandpa is generous, Sparkles received a Saturday piece of gum as well. <br />
<br />
My hope is that Sparkles, in her lifetime, pursues wisdom with the same passion that she chases after a stick of gum. <br />
<br />
Proverbs 4:7 says, "Wisdom is the principal thing, therefore get wisdom..." (NKJV). "Principal thing" refers to "the beginning, the first, the chief, the best". "Get" means "to acquire, create, buy, possess". <br />
<br />
According to <a href="http://www.biblestudytools.com/nas/proverbs/2.html" target="_blank">Proverbs 2</a>, wisdom comes from the LORD, and we get wisdom by seeking it. God gives generously to all who ask for wisdom (<a href="http://www.biblestudytools.com/nas/james/1-5.html" target="_blank">James 1:5</a>). <br />
<br />
As praying grandmothers, we're asking God to give our loved ones the desire to be wise, to actively pursue wisdom, and to pay attention to His Word. <br />
<br />
The next time Sparkles asks for gum, I'll whisper a little prayer for the LORD to bless her with wisdom; and then, I'll hand her a piece!<br />

<strong>In my family, we are blessed to have received a Godly heritage that has been passed down from one generation to the next. The evidence is recorded in letters, Bible notations, and the living out of faith. All are sweet discoveries for me to know that there have been many praying ancestors in my family tree.</strong></div>

<strong>Clearly the <em>written </em>word is important to God since Jesus tells us to "rejoice that your names are written in Heaven." Luke 10: 20 (NIV). Many examples exist in Paul's letters in the New Testament where he continually encourages the saints. They are <em>written</em> letters, that we have the privilege to read and be encouraged, also. </strong></div>

<strong>Many resources are available so that your descendants will know and understand the depth of your faith. There are prayer journals, scrapbooks, letters, Bible notations, and many other ways to record your walk with the Lord for your loved ones to read. And while "oral history" (the telling of faith stories) is important also, the <em>written </em>stories are more lasting for future generations to read.</strong></div>

Following God's direction, and with the full support of her pastor, Margaret, grandmother of six, leads the group. They meet once a month to pray for their grandchildren and their world. </span></strong></div>

Holy Spirit be present in these meetings. Bless these precious grandmothers with wisdom, and unite them in love. Strengthen their faith, and encourage them. May they wait on You with expectation. Protect them from the evil one. Please perform miracles and wonders in the lives of their grandchildren! Lead other grandmothers to meet and pray together in the nation of Trinidad and Tobago.
